Your friend or loved one is lucky to have you in their life. Being willing to help someone who has an alcohol and/or drug problem can sometimes be very difficult, especially if they are in denial of the problem. We believe that family relationships play a vital role in the recovery process. PLEASE keep in mind that, though it may be difficult, during the first 7 days of treatment we ask that you allow your loved one to adjust. The distraction of phone calls and outside business can prevent them from getting into the treatment mindset they need in the first week. Don't Worry, they will make a phone call to let you know that they are settled in, and will be able to contact you if any serious situations arise. MEANWHILE......
GET SUPPORT. It is important to remember you are not alone. Support groups offered in most communities include Al-Anon, which holds regular meetings for spouses and other significant adults in an alcoholic's life, and Alateen, which is geared toward children of alcoholics. These groups help family members understand that they are not responsible for an alcoholic's drinking and that they need to take steps to take care of themselves, regardless of whether the alcoholic/addict family member chooses to get help.
Addiction treatment works for many people. But just like any chronic disease, there are varying levels of success when it comes to treatment. Some people stop drinking/drugging and remain sober. Others have long periods of sobriety with bouts of relapse. And still others cannot stop drinking/drugging for any length of time. With treatment, one thing is clear, the longer a person abstains from alcohol/drugs the more likely he or she will stay sober.
Support can help patient’s family and friends in the following ways:
